The Saffarids were one of the first indigenous Iranian dynasties to rise after the Arab conquest

Unlike many of their contemporaries, they were of non-Arab origin, and Ya‘qub ibn al-Layth was a self-made man who rose from humble origins

They challenged the power of the Abbasid Caliphate and briefly threatened Baghdad itself

The dynasty marked a revival of Persian culture and administrative practices, though their coinage and official language remained Arabic
