Sogdiana was a major political and cultural region of Central Asia, particularly during the early medieval period (5th–8th centuries CE). The city of Kesh (modern-day Shahrisabz, Uzbekistan) was an important Sogdian center, and Akhurpat is known as one of its rulers, attested through coinage and inscriptions
Political Context: Sogdiana was a collection of city-states under varying degrees of control by larger empires such as the Hephtalites, Western Turks, and early Islamic Caliphates. Akhurpat may have been a local ruler under one of these powers
