Bactrian Greeks. Eukratides I Megas (175-145 BC)
Eukratides I the Great was one of the most powerful kings of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, ruling during the mid-2nd century BC. He is known for his extensive military campaigns, coinage innovations, and conflicts with Indo-Greek rulers. Historical Significance of Eukratides I:
- Usurped the throne from the Euthydemid dynasty and established his own rule.
- Engaged in constant wars with Indo-Greek rulers, including Menander I and Demetrios II
- Issued some of the largest and most detailed coins in Hellenistic history, including the famous gold stater (weighing 169g)
- His reign ended violently, allegedly assassinated by his own son
