Description

Bactrian Greeks. Euthydemos I (230-200 BC)

Euthydemos I was one of the most significant rulers of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom. He overthrew the Diodotid dynasty and established his own rule, resisting a Seleucid invasion by Antiochus III and maintaining Greek control over Bactria and Sogdiana. His coinage, including AE (bronze) units, reflects the fusion of Hellenistic and Central Asian influences

AE unit (6.31 g)

OBVERSE: Herakles (Hercules), a popular symbol of Greek power

REVERSE: a horse galoping right, symbolizing military strength. Greek inscription “ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΕΥΘΥΔΗΜΟΥ” (“of King Euthydemos”)
