Description

Gold bracteate modeled after horseman jitals, a type of coinage that was widely circulated in Central and South Asia during the late 12th to early 13th centuries AD

This bracteate was modeled after the coins of Khwarazmshah ‘Ala al-Din Muhammad (1200–1220AD / 596–617AH) – Ghor falconer type, where a horseman holds a falcon on his outstretched arm. ‘Ala al-Din Muhammad was the ruler who expanded into Iran and Central Asia before his empire collapsed under the Mongol invasion

Pseudo-Arabic legend in the outer margine indicates that it is a later issue, dating to the Mongol conquest of Central Asia (617–624AH / 1220–1227AD). This period saw a shift in power from the Khwarazmshahs to the Mongols, leading to significant disruptions in coinage production and circulation patterns

0.51 g, 20.5 – 21.0 mm

Pierced, otherwise AU. Toned with nice hoard patina. Extremely RARE
