Description

Indo-Greek Kingdoms. Antialkidas (115-95 BC)

Antialkidas Nikephoros (“the Bringer of Victory”) was an Indo-Greek king who ruled in the northwestern Indian subcontinent, likely centered around Taxila. He is known for maintaining Greek presence in India and fostering diplomatic relations with Indian rulers, particularly the Shunga dynasty

AE unit (4.49 g)

OBVERSE: Head of Zeus right with thunder bold on shoulder. Geek legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΝΙΚΗΦΟΡΟΥ / ΑΝΤΙΑΛΚΙΔΟΥ

REVERSE: ‘Maharajasa Jayadharasa Amtialkidasa’ in Kharosthi, two caps of the Dioskouroi, two palms between, monogram in lower right field. Breakdown of the Kharosthi Inscription:

  • Maharajasa (𐨨𐨱𐨪𐨗𐨯) → “Great King” (a royal title used in Indian and Indo-Greek coinage)
  • Jayadharasa (𐨗𐨪𐨯𐨣𐨆) → “Bringer of Victory” (equivalent to the Greek title Nikephoros)
  • Amtialkidasa (𐨀𐨨𐨟𐨁𐨀𐨫𐨏𐨡𐨯) → “Antialkidas” (the king’s name, adapted to Kharosthi script)
