The Ikhshids of Samarqand were local rulers of Sogdiana under the suzerainty of the Umayyad Caliphate. Hirak (or Gurak) ruled during a period marked by shifting allegiances between the Umayyads and the Türgesh Khaganate. His reign was significant for maintaining a degree of autonomy in Samarqand while navigating the broader political struggles between the Arabs and the Turkic forces in Central Asia
