Tahir ibn Muhammad ibn Amr (d. after 909AD) was a significant figure in the Saffarid dynasty, serving as its amir from 901 to 909AD. He was the son of Muhammad ibn Amr and the grandson of the founder of the Saffarid dynasty, Amr ibn al-Layth. Tahir’s reign was marked by political turbulence, including the capture of his grandfather by the Samanids and subsequent internal strife within the dynasty. Despite these challenges, he maintained control over the Saffarid territories until his eventual downfall in 909AD, when he was defeated by the Turkish commander Sebük-eri, who was acting under the Abbasid Caliphate’s influence. Following his defeat, Tahir was captured and imprisoned in Baghdad, effectively ending his political power
This defeat marked the decline of Saffarid control in the region, as the Samanids and other local powers filled the power vacuum in eastern Iran and Khorasan
The dirham minted in Andaraba in 347 AH (958/959AD) under Abd al-Malik I b. Nuh and citing Tahir ibn Muhammad reflects the complex political landscape of the time. While Tahir’s direct involvement in the minting of this coin is not documented, his mention indicates the influence and recognition of his authority in the region, even after his fall from power. This coin serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Saffarid dynasty and its interactions with neighboring powers during the 10th century
