Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad b. Sam was one of the greatest rulers of the Ghorid Empire, a dynasty that rose from the mountainous region of Ghor (central Afghanistan) to become one of the dominant powers of the eastern Islamic world
He ruled jointly with his younger brother, Mu’izz al-Din Muhammad b. Sam (better known as Muhammad of Ghor). While Ghiyath governed the empire from its Afghan heartland and directed campaigns in Iran and Central Asia, his brother led the famous conquests into northern India that laid the foundations for the Delhi Sultanate
