Historical Context: this coin is attributed to the brief interregnum period during the Mongol invasions, when many cities continued minting coinage under local authorities or under the pressure of Mongol control, but without naming a Caliph or traditional overlord
Identified as one of the few siege coins of the Arabic world. Genghis Khan besieged Kurzuwan around June-July 1221AD. They held out for a few months before Khan massacred the inhabitants
OBVERSE: Arabic inscription around margin with date and month: تاريخ ربيع الآخرسنة ثمان عشروستمائة (dated to Rabi II, of the year 618); in center الملك (al-Malik)
REVERSE: mint and Kalima in four lines: كرزوان لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله (Kurzuwan; There is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the apostle of Allah)
