Durrani Empire. Timur Shah (1186-1207AH / 1773-1793AD)

AR rupee (11.10 g)

Minted at Balkh

The mint is mentioned as “Balkh, Umm al-Bilād” (بلخ أمّ البلاد) that literally means “Balkh, the Mother of Cities”

Dated 1201AH on OBVERSE

Historical Context:

Timur Shah, son of Ahmad Shah Durrani (the empire’s founder), moved the capital from Kandahar to Kabul

The mint at Balkh reflects his control over northern territories at the Amu Darya frontier

1201 AH (1786/87 AD) was in the later half of his reign, when he faced both Uzbek incursions in the north and Sikh pressures in the east

Balkh itself carried the honorific Umm al-Bilād (“Mother of Cities”), and its coinage demonstrates its symbolic importance as a mint town even during turbulent times

Superb XF to AU. Extremely RARE
