Central Asia / Silk Road. Hunnic gold imitation of Byzantine style. 6th – 7th cent. AD
AV imitation of Constantinople mint AV Solidus of Justinian I (542-565 AD)
Helmeted and cuirassed bust facing, holding globus cruciger, shield on left shoulder; blundered legend
0.33 g, 16 mm
Such thin gold bracteates are said to be burial tokens, uniface burial piece derived from a gold solidus of the late Roman emperors. Gold burial pieces were normally placed on the corpse during the burial, or attached to its shroud or other ornaments
