Description
Afghan Civic Copper fulus minted in Qandahar in 1072AH (approximately 1661-1662AD)
During this period, Qandahar was a contested region between the Mughals and the Safavids. In 1079AH Qandahar was under Safavid control after being captured from the Mughals in 1649AD by Shah Abbas II. Safavid rule in the region influenced local coinage
It is historically significant due to the geopolitical struggles between the Mughal Empire and the Safavid Empire over control of Qandahar city
The Mughal-Safavid Conflict Over Qandahar:
- Qandahar was a strategic city, serving as a key trade and military hub linking Persia (Iran), Central Asia, and India
- It changed hands multiple times between the Mughals and the Safavids during the 16th and 17th centuries
- In 1649, Safavid Shah Abbas II recaptured Qandahar from the Mughals under Shah Jahan after a prolonged siege. This ended Mughal attempts to control the city permanently
- By 1079AH (1668AD), Qandahar had been under Safavid control for nearly two decades, and this coin represents their rule over the region
